March 8 – International Women’s Day

Next Monday, March 8, International Women’s Day will be celebrated around the world.

There are many articles that talk about its origin, meaning and relevance in a society like ours. At
BRUSHBOO
we didn’t want to miss out on contributing our little piece of bamboo to such an important movement.

It is difficult to talk about feminism without making mistakes, or falling into idioms, but it is important to point out that being a feminist is not and has never been a matter of being fashionable. As a society, we have an obligation to promote gender equality, which is nothing more than supporting this movement .

Empowerment. Feminist. International Women's Day.

What is the origin? Why March 8?

This journey dates back to the mid-19th century, at the height of the Industrial Revolution. On March 8, 1857, thousands of women textile workers decided to take to the streets of New York under the slogan “Bread and Roses” to protest against miserable working conditions and to demand shorter working hours and an end to child labor.

An episode that marked the history of feminism and gave rise to purple as the color of the movement was when on
March 25, 1911
a T-shirt factory was set on fire of New York. A total of 123 women and 23 men, who were unable to escape because those in charge locked all the doors to prevent robberies, died. Most were young immigrants between 14 and 23 years of age.

Since then, thousands of people have taken to the streets year after year to vindicate the feminist cause.

Feminism. Ecofeminism.

But… what does it mean to be a feminist? Today we can find numerous speeches and many definitions of this word. One of the simplest and most straightforward is given by Angela Davis, an African-American activist, who announces that “Feminism is the radical idea that women are people”. Therefore, being a feminist is nothing more than considering women as persons, with the same rights and, above all, with the same freedoms as others.

An example of these freedoms: self-care

Feminist self-care could be defined as the need to set aside a time each day for ourselves in order to, as the word indicates, take care of ourselves,
take care of ourselves
. Why is this important? Throughout history, women have taken care of the domestic sphere as well as their working life. Tasks and more tasks that have forced them to take care of others and not themselves.

On March 8, the need for the division of tasks between men and women is also claimed, but in addition to this, the importance of the representation of women in companies, especially in high positions, mostly occupied by men, is emphasized. The end of the wage gap, as women are currently still paid 19% less globally than men. The same opportunities, since 16 million girls will never go to school . And above all,
the right to life, since 1,081 women have been
1,081 women have been murdered since records began.

With this post we want to emphasize the importance of the education of the youngest, since it is at the earliest ages when we have to take care that boys and girls grow up believing in equal opportunities and that they support each other. We would also like to highlight the relevance of this movement in all aspects of society.

Feminism is changing our values. That many women and girls have the opportunities opportunities that have been denied to them for a long time. And that we women have a voice that is getting louder and louder.

Feminism. March 8th. Feminist demands. Demonstration.
