This week we celebrate World Oceans Day, specifically this Thursday, June 8. This international celebration is held to raise awareness of the importance of the oceans for life on Earth and the need to protect and sustainably manage them.
The oceans cover more than 70% of the planet’s surface and are home to a great diversity of marine species and ecosystems. They also provide us with oxygen, food, resources and ecosystem services. However, they face multiple threats such as pollution, overfishing, climate change, acidification, habitat loss and invasion of exotic species.
These problems affect the health and balance of the oceans and jeopardize the benefits they provide. World Oceans Day is therefore an opportunity to reflect on our connection to the ocean and to take action to conserve and restore it.
On the occasion of this date, from
Brushboo
we want to talk about the importance of the oceans for our planet and what measures we should take in our daily lives to care for and protect them.
Role of the oceans in our planet
The oceans are essential for life on our planet. It can be said that they are the lungs of the planet. According to the UN, the oceans supply half of the oxygen we breathe and annually absorb 26% of the anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions released into the atmosphere. This helps regulate the climate and mitigate climate change. They also store large amounts of heat and distribute water and energy around the world through ocean currents.
In addition, they are a source of biodiversity and wealth. The oceans are home to millions of marine species, many of them still unknown to science. These species are part of complex and diverse ecosystems such as coral reefs, kelp forests or mangroves. These ecosystems provide habitats, refuges and breeding grounds for marine fauna, as well as ecosystem services.
Despite the importance of the oceans to our planet, they are currently endangered. They have to face multiple threats such as pollution by plastics and other waste, overfishing, ocean warming, habitat loss and degradation…
¿Cow can we protect them from the threats they face?
The oceans need our action. To protect them and ensure their sustainability, urgent and coordinated action is needed at the local, national and international levels. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions, manage fisheries resources responsibly, eliminate plastics and other pollutants from the marine environment, establish marine protected areas and restore damaged habitats…..
But what can we do at home? One of the first steps we can take is to reduce plastic consumption. Avoid using single-use plastic bags, bottles, straws, swabs and other single-use plastic products. From Brushboo we recommend you to opt for reusable or biodegradable alternatives.
In our section
ECO HOME
you will find the best ecological alternatives to care for and protect the oceans. You can find everything from reusable bamboo straws or wheat straws to organic bamboo and stainless steel thermo-bottle, bamboo lunch box or collapsible mesh bag. Do your bit for the oceans by choosing these ECO products!
Another product you can add to your routine to reduce your plastic consumption is to start using
bamboo toothbrushes
. Our brushes and their packaging are 100% ecological, so they are respectful of our ecosystem.
With small gestures we can make a big difference. Remember that the oceans are our greatest treasure and we depend on them to live. Let’s take care of them as they deserve! This is the only way to ensure their future and ours.
