Microplastics in infusions. How to avoid them?

Did you know that…

In general, they estimate that a person can ingest between 13,731 and 68,415 microplastic particles each year through food alone?

To give you an idea, according to a WWF study, every week people ingest the equivalent of one credit card in plastic; that is, an average of 52 cards a year.

What are microplastics?

  • Microplastics are small synthetic particles that come from petroleum derivatives.
  • Particles of less than 5 mm of this material are considered microplastics.
  • They are difficult to degrade and can be found in food, beverages, household products such as laundry detergents, toothpaste, skin care products, as well as in clothing.

Microplastics in tea bags

Tea and tea bags that are made of plastic (polypropylene) release millions of these microparticles when heated, specifically 11.6 billion microplastics released from a single tea bag.

According to the UN, it is estimated that there are up to 14 million metric tons of microplastics in the sea, 500 times more than the number of stars in our galaxy!

Scientists warn that these microplastics are not eliminated and accumulate in the human body. Water fleas exposed to this water undergo anatomical abnormalities and behavioral changes.

Even so, 90% of infusion manufacturers still use polypropylene.

How to avoid microplastics?

We recommend the consumption of plastic free products , such as Conca Organics infusions, which combine the best aromatic plants to ensure that the infusions have an unmistakable flavor and aroma.

All Conca Organics products are carbon free, measuring and offsetting 100% of the emissions in the life cycle of their products.

Conca Organics believes that everything that can be measured can be improved. For this reason, they eco-design all their products including the environment as another criterion to be taken into account in the design and formulation of their products through Life Cycle Analysis technology, a tool that provides environmental information to make better decisions.

Life Cycle Assessment, LCA, is a standardized tool that allows the environmental assessment of a product, process, service or organization with a life cycle perspective.

Conca Organics uses 100% plastic-free packaging, with corn soilon pyramids and naturflex bags, a compostable cellulose derivative. With this practice they are able to reduce their CO₂ emissions by 35 %.

Their organic cultivation ensures that they are free of pesticides and other chemicals.
Conca Organics was born from the need of two young environmentalists not to pollute the planet with their food.

With sustainability in its DNA, Conca Organics is the first organic brand on the market to offer plastic-free products with a 100% offset carbon footprint, meaning they do not add CO₂ to the atmosphere.

In 2020, they offset 60.7 tons CO₂e associated with the carbon footprint of their products. This is equivalent to:

  • 537.4 km traveled by an average passenger car
  • 746,733.54 loaded smartphones
  • 997,586.67 hours of use of one incandescent bulb

These emissions were offset by collaborating in the following offset projects: a reforestation project in Mexico, a hydroelectric project in Indonesia and a reforestation project in Panama.

In addition, in 2020 they planted a total of 100 native trees in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico in collaboration with Plant-for-the-Planet.
