For some years now, animal experimentation has been prohibited in Spain. However, there are some exceptions to this law and the reality is that, to this day, many products that have been tested on animals are still being marketed.
Surely you have seen thousands of images of laboratories testing products -whether cosmetics or medicines- on animals that are cruelly treated throughout their lives. The most recent, a case uncovered by the Cruelty Free International NGO in Madrid where it was discovered that certain drugs were tested on animals.
There are some products that have to be tested before being put on the market, since they are related to health, you must be sure that they will not harm the people who use them.
The practice of animal experimentation began in the early 1990s.since the beginning of the twentieth century, when a woman went blind after using mascara, which prompted the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to pass the Federal Cosmetic Food and Drug Act in 1938.
However, the reality is that it does not make sense to experiment on animals, since its results are not applicable to human beings. And that today, thanks to advances in science, there are methods that have proven to be most effective, such as sophisticated tests using human cells and tissues, advanced computer modeling techniques and studies with human volunteers.
Knowing this information, you are probably wondering…. Why is animal testing still going on if it has been proven to be ineffective? “Scientists experiment on animals because that is what they have always done” is the opinion of Jane Goodall, a primatologist who proclaims the need to conserve the environment and fight for animal rights.
By 2020, animal testing for scientific purposes had been reduced in Spain by almost half in recent years. 10 years. This decrease is mainly due to reasons such as the directive that requires the promotion of the 3Rs, i.e., to replace animals by other techniques whenever possible, to reduce to a minimum its use in laboratories and experiments, and refine the methods used in the research.
While these data are positive, with the recent images released in our country, it is clear that there is still a lot of work to be done.
From BRUSHBOO we want to emphasize how important it is for us to ensure that the products do not have any kind of animal cruelty behind them. From our range of solid cosmetics, consisting of soaps and shampoos, to cutlery and bamboo straws, they are vegan and cruelty free.
