We celebrate world day without plastic bags, but… Are cloth bags the best option?

Colaboration with Help Up

According to the report published by the UN Our planet is drowning in plastic pollution”, Around 10 million plastic bags are consumed per minute worldwide. In 2018, each Spanish used an average of one bag every other day. The truth is that consumption has been decreasing year by year thanks to citizen awareness and shopping alternatives. You can read about it in the article Say goodbye to single-use plastic bags”From the blog of HelpUP.
That is why every July 3 the “International free day of Plastic bags” with the aim of reducing the use of single-use bags. A single plastic bag has a half-life of 15 minutes and is then discarded, ending up, in the worst case, in the environment contaminating the seas. Each bag takes more than 100 years to degrade. In Spain, we still continue to consume an average of 180 plastic bags per person.

Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 crisis, the consumption of single-use plastics has grown considerably and, for a limited time, we have put ourselves on “pause”. We have all been tempted to reuse plastic bags when we have gone to the supermarket, the packages we received at home came with more plastic than ever. Something that may be understandable but that cannot become an excuse.

Cloth bags seem to be the perfect alternative to permanently replace plastic bags. These are some of its advantages compared to paper or raffia:

  1.     They are the most sustainable alternative. Bringing our own bag from home, washed and disinfected is, without a doubt, the best option. They are also easily washable, a clear advantage over the very used raffia bags.

 2.     Last longer. Cloth bags are stronger than
paper, plastic or raffia bags that can be used hundreds of times.

  1.     You can customize them. There are many designs and alternatives that allow you to go shopping while maintaining your style.

  1.     They are easy to store. Who has not had difficulties to store and fold the raffia and plastic bags? With the cloth bags we save space and time.

  1.     Producing them consumes less resources. The energy used to produce paper bags is much higher than that used for cloth bags.

6. They can be produced ecologicalfor example organic cotton.

Most of the common shopping bags are made of polyethylene: a non-biodegradable plastic polymer, so we must avoid consuming them.

As you can see, cloth bags represent a great advantage over plastic bags, but be careful! We must continue to consume responsibly. The effort to eliminate plastic bags will not help if we accumulate cotton bags in our closet. If every time we go to an event, the super or similar we tend to accumulate this type of bags. We must extend its life cycle as much as possible.

An article published by THE SPANISH opens the debate on cloth bags under the title "These are the times you have to use your cloth bag so that it is less toxic than the plastic one" We invite you to reflect on the subject and comment on what you think.

Fortunately, society is increasingly aware of the need to eliminate plastic bags and we know that thanks to the Law, starting in 2020, this day we will have to celebrate it more than ever, since single-use plastics will have disappeared. , and although not all plastic bags seem to fall into this category, we will see many more sustainable alternatives for our consumption.

Companies like Helpup they work to continue to enhance environmental partnerships and initiatives, as volunteers cleaning up beaches and terrestrial ecosystems, in businesses and between people so that plastic bags and all single-use plastics disappear, as soon as possible of our lives, with a lot of emphasis on the compliance of the SDGs. That's why since 2018 it has formed an alliance with Brushboo to offer to other companies Eco-kits containing personal care and hygiene products made of bamboo, such as toothbrushes, flossing and bottles replacing typical plastic ones.

More than consuming one thing or another it is about doing it as little as possible and extending the life cycle of the products as much as we can, always keeping the focus on a circular consumption.

The key is Reduce the use of single-use plastics until they are no longer necessary for use. For the time being, both companies and individuals are committed to contributing to our grain of sand thinking about the preservation of our planet.
